For those of you who were able to participate in the Ocean Sciences Meeting a few weeks ago, I hope you’ve had a chance to recover from that very busy event!
Despite the challenges of convening virtually, we had great participation from the community. Two days of town halls and workshops held on February 24-25 introduced a range of topics including Student and Early Career interests, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, and the U.N. Decade of Ocean Science. TOS hosted a very well attended JEDI Committee Town Hall, and a detailed report on the results of this event will be forthcoming. When OSM resumed on Monday, February 28, a full suite of oral and poster sessions continued through the week. On the last day of the conference the conference co-chairs reflected on the scope of activities:

I would like to sincerely thank Grace Chang (TOS Co-Chair), Dick Crout (TOS Vice-Chair), Logan Brenner (TOS Early Career Representative), and Josette McLean (TOS Student Representative) for their extraordinary efforts in planning the 2022 Ocean Sciences Meeting. We’re very excited that Dick Crout will serve as the TOS Co-Chair for the 2024 Ocean Sciences Meeting, and we look forward to meeting in person near his home base, New Orleans, Louisiana. To round out the team of TOS representatives on the planning committee, we invite self-nominations by June 15 for vice-chair, early career representative, and student representative for the 2024 Ocean Sciences Meeting. FRONTIERS IN OCEAN OBSERVING: CALL FOR IDEAS ON FOCUS TOPICS
Deadline: April 15, 2022
In December 2022, The Oceanography Society plans to publish its second annual supplement to Oceanography magazine on “Frontiers in Ocean Observing.” The first supplement is available online. As a first step toward the next publication, we are seeking ideas from the community for specific focus topics to cover within a six-theme overall framework. We are also seeking volunteers who would be interested in serving as subject matter experts for proposed topics. These guest editors would be responsible for reviewing the scientific content of five to six two-page contributions within one chapter. Read the full call for ideas here.

VOTE FOR TOS COUNCIL MEMBERS BY APRIL 2
The TOS Council Election is underway. TOS Council members guide the direction and activities of the Society. Therefore, voting in this election is an important function of membership. The persons elected will participate in directing the affairs and determining the future of the Society.
REGISTRATION AND ABSTRACT SUBMISSION NOW AVAILABLE
We’re excited to announce that registration and abstract submission is now open!
To review fees and access the registration system, please visit the conference Registration page. After completing registration, the link to the abstract submission system will be provided in the registration confirmation email message. Abstracts must be submitted by May 4, 2022. Please visit the conference Abstract Instructions page for directions on how to prepare and submit your abstract.
We realize that planning conference travel may still be challenging, therefore, attendees have the option to complete registration by either providing credit card payment during registration, or by selecting “Invoice Me” to complete the registration process. Payment will not be due until August 1, 2022.
SEEKING SELF-NOMINATIONS
TOS Representatives for OSM 2024
We invite TOS members to submit self-nominations for Vice-Chair, Early Career Representative, or Student Representative for the 2024 Ocean Sciences Meeting Planning Committee by June 15, 2022:
All TOS Representatives are expected to:
- Participate in regularly scheduled monthly one-hour Planning Committee conference calls, as well as additional conference calls with other relevant committee representatives from AGU and ASLO as needed
- Attend two planning committee meetings (either in-person or virtually). The first will likely take place in June 2023, and the other will take place in October 2023.
- Assist with reviewing and merging sessions and communicating with session chairs as needed; work with other committee members and staff to create the schedule of oral and poster presentations
- Collaborate with other relevant committee members from AGU and ASLO to review past Ocean Sciences Meeting activities and determine activities for OSM 2024. Create plans, invite speakers, coordinate with conference staff on logistical needs as necessary.
- Attend the 2024 Ocean Sciences Meeting, and host, moderate, or monitor activities as assigned.
Travel expenses for participating in in-person planning meetings as well as attendance at the 2024 Ocean Sciences Meeting, will be supported by the Ocean Sciences Meeting general budget.
PLEASE NOTE: The 2024 TOS Vice-Chair will assume the position of TOS Co-Chair for the 2026 Ocean Sciences Meeting (OSM) immediately after the 2024 OSM concludes.
To submit your self-nomination, please prepare a short statement indicating your motivation, interest, and relevant experience (2,000 characters maximum) and submit that information along with your CV by using one of the following submission forms:

JOIN THE EXPERT ROSTER LIST FOR THE UN DECADE
The Decade is being coordinated internationally by a small team (referred to as the Decade Coordination Unit – DCU) within the Secretariat of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO (IOC-UNESO) in an effort to promote transformational, large-scale change to advance urgent action on moving from the ‘ocean we have’ to the ‘ocean we want’. The DCU is looking for people who are interested in serving on the Expert Panel, to: 1) support strategic ambition setting, 2) assess alignment of Decade Actions with Ambitions, and 3) to help review, report, and manage Decade reports and conference documentation. The Expert Roster is open to anyone via self-nomination, although expertise in co-design, partnership building, and capacity development is desired. Registration from SIDS, LDCs, early career professionals, and women are encouraged.
Specific functions of the Expert Panel include:
- To review a small number of programmatic submissions from the Calls for Decade Actions and analyze them against the criteria for both categorization as a Decade Program and demonstration of Ocean Decade endorsement criteria (see Annex for criteria)
- To provide feedback on endorsement for each submission reviewed via an assessment form provided by the DCU/IOC Secretariat
- To provide feedback on the review process to the DCU
- To provide feedback on proposed monitoring and evaluation indicators, particularly those linked to the Decade Challenges
- To provide ideal targets for each Decade Challenge
- To write case studies, narratives, and analyses for the State of the Decade reports
- To scope the foci of Ocean Decade conferences
- To prepare documentation for the Ocean Decade conferences
