The Challenger Society for Marine Science is a learned Society for marine scientists in the UK with a strong commitment to positive action to improve diversity, equity and inclusivity (DEI) for underrepresented ocean professionals. At this crucial moment for DEI across scientific disciplines we will build on past efforts to convene a townhall in collaboration with The Oceanography Society JEDI and the Interdisciplinary Marine Early Career Network committees. This meeting will bring together DEI advocates and allies across the international marine science sector to share knowledge, highlight effective DEI interventions and foster community-driven progress. The townhall will begin with a 30-minute scene-setting panel discussion followed by an open dialogue with attendees including creative and inclusive ways to ensure broad participation, such as online interactive polls. We welcome all who share our aspirations for an inclusive and equitable ocean science community and/or are curious about DEI and allyship. A key outcome will be a collaborative article consolidating the successful initiatives and lessons learned from across the community. This will act as a resource to inspire future targeted actions to improve representation and inclusion of diverse communities in marine science and strengthen the role of scientific societies in driving systemic progress.

14:00–15:00
Career Center, Scotland Event Campus

A strong and authentic online presence can open doors to collaborations, funding, jobs, and leadership opportunities. Panelists from academia, industry, and science communication will share practical strategies and real-world insights on what makes an online profile compelling. Participants will gain tools to showcase their expertise, values, and impact in ways that resonate with diverse audiences, from academic peers to potential employers, policy makers, and the public.
