OSM 2024 Activities
As many of us begin planning our schedule for the Ocean Sciences Meeting in February, we would like to bring your attention to several TOS-related activities. This page is a work in progress and will have new content added as it becomes available. Be sure to check back often.
MONDAY–THURSDAY – FEB 19–22
TOS Booth
TOS will share Booth #519 with our fellow Ocean Sciences Meeting partner societies, AGU and ASLO. Please stop by from Monday afternoon through Thursday morning to pick up a free gift for TOS members! Staff and Council members will be on hand to chat, and you are welcome to take a break on our sofa.

TUESDAY – FEB 20
CV Best Practices Workshop Part 1: Surveying the Current Landscape
15:00 – 16:00
Career Center, Poster Hall, First Floor (NOLACC)
It is often assumed that curriculum vitae (CVs) provide complete and accurate information about an individual’s academic preparation, skills, competencies, and experience, but this may not always be true. CVs can include errors, omissions, or misrepresentations that may lead hiring managers to focus only on grades, institutional affiliations, or work experience. CVs tend to favor those with awareness of educational and professional development opportunities, thereby leading to inequalities and inequities.
WEDNESDAY – FEB 21
TOS Honors Breakfast
07:15 – 08:15
Great Hall Foyer, Morial Convention Center
Please join your fellow TOS members for the complimentary TOS Honors Breakfast. We will honor recently selected Awardees, Medalists, and Fellows. Several hundred TOS members attend this event, which provides a great opportunity for networking in a relaxed setting. RSVP by Monday, February 19, 2024!
Society Awards Plenary
10:30 – 12:30
Great Hall A-B, First Floor (NOLACC)
Members of the Rutgers University Center for Ocean Observing Leadership team (recipients of the TOS Ocean Observing Team Award) will give a presentation as part of this joint TOS-AGU-ASLO session.
TOS JEDI Committee Town Hall: Scientific Societies’ Roles in Building Inclusive Communities
12:45 – 13:45
R08, Second Floor (NOLACC)
The ocean science community has been recognized as one of the least diverse scientific communities, despite numerous efforts to broaden participation in the field over the last 40 years. The Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (JEDI) Committee of The Oceanography Society (TOS) invites participants to focus on three questions: What are some successful models of expanding underrepresented minority participation in ocean and coastal sciences? What can be done to make ocean and coastal careers more accessible? How can we build a just and fair scientific and workplace culture? TAKE THE SURVEY
CV Best Practices Workshop Part 2: Meet Current Expectations/Improve the Process
15:00 – 16:00
Career Center, Poster Hall, First Floor (NOLACC)
Panelist-audience discussions will focus on how CVs/resumes can be prepared to meet current expectations from academia, agencies, NGOs and industry.
THURSDAY – FEB 22
The Oceanography Society Membership Meeting
13:00 – 14:00
R06-R07, Second Floor (NOLACC)
Join TOS Councilors and fellow members to receive updates on TOS activities and future plans. Your input as members is valued, and this event provides an opportunity to hear your ideas!
