Government has become preoccupied with the “relevance” of science. Congressman George Brown, Chairman of the U.S. House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology, now leads the fight in the United States to “‘rethink” science policy to ensure that scientific research is linked more directly to national goals such as economic competitiveness, public health, national security, and environmental protection, among others (Task Force on the Health of Research 19921.
