First Paragraph

Since 1993, the Office of Naval Research has been managing a program of research (in collaboration with the Department of Defense and the Defense Nuclear Agency) that is assessing the fate of radioactive waste material deposited in the Arctic by the former Soviet Union (FSU). This Arctic Nuclear Waste Assessment Program (ANWAP) includes basic and applied research in both the terrestrial and oceanic portions of the Arctic, in adjoining regions in the North Pacific (e.g., the Bering Sea) and in Russia (e.g., the watersheds of the Ob and Yenisey rivers). This report gives a brief overview of the program and some of its initial results.
