The Oceanography Society (TOS) is proud to be the lead institution sponsoring the 2012 Ocean Sciences meeting February 20–24, 2012, in Salt Lake City, Utah. Meeting co-chairs Mel Briscoe (TOS), Eric Itsweire (American Geophysical Union), and Mary Scranton (American Society of Limnology and Oceanography), along with the organizing committee, have done a great job in putting together an exciting meeting program. The response by the oceanographic community has been overwhelming—3,535 abstracts have been submitted for the meeting as of the end of October. There is still plenty of time to register for the meeting. You can find out more about the scientific program, plenary sessions, and town hall meetings at: http://www.sgmeet.com/osm2012.
Within this large meeting of numerous concurrent sessions, the organizing committee has reserved blocks of time for all of us to get together to hear longer, in-depth, interdisciplinary talks at plenary sessions (http://www.sgmeet.com/osm2012/plenary.asp). These plenary sessions, designed to provide a greater sense of community and longer and more comprehensive presentations, were a component of earlier TOS meetings. Our members wanted to maintain this successful format when TOS became one of the sponsors of the larger Ocean Sciences meetings.
TOS is organizing a breakfast meeting for members and young scientists where we will extol the virtues of becoming a TOS member as well as provide opportunities for networking and mentoring. If you are interested in sitting with students at the event, answering their questions, or just telling sea stories, please contact us at [email protected].
While you are walking around the exhibits and posters and need a place to meet or just sit and relax, please stop by the TOS booth. We will provide comfortable chairs, good conversation, and, of course, material about TOS and membership applications.
I look forward to seeing you in Salt Lake City!
– Mike Roman, TOS President
