TOS Strategy 2030

TOS has been successful in the past few years at growing its membership and starting various programs for students and young scientists and has revamped its honors program. We are now launching an initiative that we call “TOS Strategy 2030.” We would like to engage all of you in the evolution of TOS. How can the Society provide additional value and support members? Are we realising our potential at each stage of their careers, whether in academia, public or non-profit organizations, government and/or industry? Are we covering all the disciplines and areas for the oceanographic community? How are we doing with membership communication and engagement with those around us? Is our international footprint adequate? Should we be more aggressive in fundraising and resource mobilisation?

We are planning to use several methods to gather input from all of you including disseminating a survey, convening a town hall on Wednesday, February 19th during the 2020 Ocean Sciences Meeting, and holding the “TOS Strategy 2030 Retreat” on Saturday, February 22. TOS members are welcome to participate in all events.

One of the best qualities of TOS is the ability for members to suggest ideas for Council consideration, and the healthy volunteer spirit of TOS members helping with TOS initiatives. This is your opportunity to guide the future of our Society, and we welcome your ideas!

TOS STRATEGY 2030 SURVEY

TOS invites you to contribute your ideas for the TOS Strategy 2030 strategic plan by responding to the questions in the TOS Strategy 2030 Survey. To help inform our discussions during several events at the Ocean Sciences Meeting, we would appreciate receiving your survey response by Tuesday, February 18, 2020. For those of you attending the Ocean Sciences Meeting, please stop by the TOS exhibit (#109) to receive a small gift in appreciation for completing the survey.

Are we covering all the disciplines and areas for the oceanographic community? How are we doing in terms of membership communication and engagement with those around us? TOS STRATEGY 2030 RETREAT

Saturday, February 22, 8:30 am–4:30 pm
Hotel del Coronado, Coronado Island, CA

The goal of this gathering is to bring together TOS members and leaders to discuss ways to enhance existing TOS programs and create new initiatives that can provide long-term value to members.

Some discussion topics that TOS president Martin Visbeck has raised in a recent TOS NEWS column include:

  • How can the Society provide additional value and support members?
  • Are we realizing our potential at each stage of their careers, whether in academia, public or non-profit organizations, government and/or industry?
  • Are we covering all the disciplines and areas for the oceanographic community?
  • How are we doing with membership communication and engagement with those around us?
  • Is our international footprint adequate?
  • Should we be more aggressive in fundraising and resource mobilization?

The retreat will start at 8:30 and breakfast will be provided. For lunch, we will break into small groups and will continue discussions at nearby restaurants on Coronado Island. The retreat will conclude at 4:30 pm. Funds are available to support the costs of extending stays at conference hotels in San Diego for Friday and Saturday night (if needed). To apply to participate, please complete this quick survey.
